The Library has arranged a trial of ebook content from Woodhead Publishing from 20 February to 3 April 2012.

The trial, which is available on-campus or off-campus with your Athens account, contains collections of ebooks in Materials, Engineering, Textile Technology and Food Science, Technology & Nutrition.

IEEE Xplore Downtime, Saturday 28 January 2012

Practical Law Company : login problems NOW RESOLVED

6/2/2012 : Following investigation by PLC, this issue is now resolved, and you should no longer see the "invalid return URL message"

We are currently experience a problem logging into the Practical Law Company : Construction resource. This resource is accessed via Athens both on and off campus.

Upon logging in via Athens, if you see a message "Invalid return URL specified" you should leave this window open, and open a new window or tab on top and re-navigate to the Practical Law Company homepage. When you click the Login button on the PLC homepage, you will be able to access the resource.

Until this issue is resolved, to avoid this problem, we advise that you login to resource via Athens directly on the homepage before browsing for specific content.

The old platforms - CSA Illumina and ProQuest legacy - will be switched off in early January 2011, and all users from Salford will be re-directed to the new platform.

From January, if you have any saved searches or alters in the previous platforms, you will be able to transfer them over to the new platform automatically using the Import to My Research feature which will be available, or manually using the instructions here

Box of Broadcasts

Box of Broadcasts is a new off-air recording and media archive service.

Box of Broadcasts is available to staff and students of member institutions of the British Universities Film & Video Council that hold an ERA+ license.

This TV scheduling service allows you to record TV and radio programmes that are scheduled to be broadcast over the next seven days as well as retrieving programmes from the last seven days from a selected list of recorded channels.

You can access Box of Broadcasts, to record and watch programmes, anywhere in the UK using your Athens username and password. You can find these in the passwords file on your F: drive.

Early Music Online is a pilot project in which 300 of the world’s earliest surviving volumes of printed music, held in the British Library, have been digitised and made freely available online.
You can explore the digitised content via the British Library Catalogue. Included are full details of each digitised book, with an inventory of the contents of each, searchable by composer name, title of composition, date and subject.

Reminder about the use of Library resources

Virtually all of the electronic resources to which the Library provides access to via SOLAR are licenced to the University, and its students and staff.

These licences vary from resource to resource, but each spells out the authorized use which you, as staff and students of the University, are allowed to make of the materials.

In general terms, the Library’s electronic resources are only available for you to make use of personally for educational purposes. You must not download and redistribute materials to others, either in printed form, by email or via social networking sites, and you should not use resources for any commercial purposes. Some resources do allow for materials to be distributed to students in printed or electronic course-packs, for example via a virtual learning environment, but do check the terms of the site in question, or contact the Library, before doing this.

Any passwords provided to you by the University are for your personal use only, and must not be shared.

Should you wish to alert other members of the University to particular online resources you should send links requiring the recipient to sign-in or authenticate before they can access the resource. You must not download and send PDF copies of documents, or upload documents to social networking sites.

You are reminded also of the University’s IT Acceptable Use Policy. Any infringements of this policy, including illegally sharing or distributing licenced or copyrighted works, will be investigated.

Vogue (US) Archive - trial until 19 October 2011

The University is trialling an online version of Vogue (US).

The resource consists of 122,000 page images from 558 complete issues, taken from every decade from the 1920s to 2010.

The full resource will include every page of Vogue back to the first issue in 1892!

The Vogue archive will be available until 19 October 2011.

From off-campus, you will need to use your Athens username and password to access this. You'll find these details in the password file on your F drive.

JISC MediaHub is a new platform giving unprecedented access to over 1 million multimedia items.

It brings together content previously available via NewsFilm Online, Film & Sound Online and Digital Images for Education, in a simple and easy-to-use platform.

The content - thousands of audio files, tens of thousands of videos, and hundreds of thousands of images - come from a wide range of sources, including Imperial War Museum, the Royal Mail, Getty Images, ITN, Design Council Archives, Imperial War Museum, Royal Geographical Society, Fitzwilliam Museum and many more.

The collection of multimedia items will be of particular interest to students at MediaCityUK.

JISC MediaHub is freely accessible on-campus, and from off-campus is accessible using your Athens username and password.

One of the Library’s largest and most well-used electronic information providers is soon to launch a new platform.

ProQuest’s new platform will replace the majority of resources which we currently access from ProQuest, CSA or Chadwyck-Healey interfaces.

The new platform is available to use now, but the old platforms will be available until the end of June 2011.

There is online training on the new platform available directly from ProQuest – all members of the University can either view recorded sessions or take part in live training with specialist ProQuest trainers. For more information on training see www.proquest.com/training

"BioOne provides a unique aggregation of high-impact bioscience research journals, featuring timely content on a wide-array of today’s most pressing topics, including global warming, stem cell research, ecological and biodiversity conservation"

The Economist, now from 1843

The University how has access to the Economist from volume 1 (1843) to the present day.

Access to the entire run of the Economist is available on-campus with no username or password required, and off-campus with your Athens details.

The recently purchased historical archive includes over 540,000 pages, and over 8500 issues, covering historical, social, political and economic events ranging from the Great Depression of the 1920s and 30s to the Finnish rock group Lordi winning the Eurovision Song Contest.

Eighteenth Century Collections Online

Members of the University now have access to the Eighteenth Century Collections Online

This collection has been purchased by JISC, and offers online access to to over 180,000 titles (200,000 volumes) and nearly 33 million pages published between 1701 and 1800.

"ECCO Parts 1 and 2 include books and directories, Bibles, sheet music, sermons, advertisements, and works by many well-known and lesser-known authors. Most titles are in English, however scholars will also find material in French, German, Latin, Ancient Greek, Italian and Welsh.

Included are works from women writers of the 18th Century, collections on the French Revolution, and numerous editions of the works of Shakespeare. Multiple editions of each individual work are offered to enable scholars to make textual comparisons of the works. New material in ECCO Part 2 includes 96 new editions of Shakespeare and 900 new works and editions by over 400 female authors." JISC Collections

UK OpenURL Router service at openurl.ac.uk

The way that this service collects and uses data from Salford, and other HE institutions, is changing.

When you search for and/or access bibliographic resources such as journal articles, your request may be routed through the UK OpenURL Router Service (openurl.ac.uk), which is administered by EDINA at the University of Edinburgh. The Router service captures and anonymises activity data which are then included in an aggregation of data about use of bibliographic resources throughout UK Higher Education (UK HE). The aggregation is used as the basis of services for users in UK HE and is made available to the public so that others may use it as the basis of services. The aggregation contains no information that could identify you as an individual.

IBSS: International Bibliography of the Social Sciences

The International Bibliography of the Social Sciences is now available to the University.

"This database includes over two million bibliographic references to journal articles and to books, reviews and selected chapters dating back to 1951. It is unique in its broad coverage of international material and incorporates over 100 languages and countries. Over 2,800 journals are regularly indexed and some 7,000 books are included each year."

PI Navigator is a financial and capital markets database providing access to over 15 million global company filings including annual reports, Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A), equity transactional documents (including Initial Public Offerings) and bond prospectuses. Oxford English Dictionary - new interface

The OED has launched a new interface for its online dictionary.

You can read more about the new site here, or just try it out for yourself.

The dictionary includes over 600,000 words, and 3 million quotations, and now also links to other resources from the OUP.

The new OED can be accessed on-campus with no username/password, and off-campus using your Athens username and password. You can find these on your F: drive.

BankScope - new resource

The Library has recently subscribed to Bankscope.

Bankscope contains information on 30,000 banks from around the world. You can use it to research individual banks and find banks with specific profiles and analyse them. Bankscope has up to 16 years of detailed accounts for each bank. The information includes:

Ratings, and rating reports
Country risk and country finance reports
Stock data for listed banks
Directors and contacts
Economic country profiles and outlooks
Business and related news
M&A deals and rumours

BankScope can be used on-campus without a username/password, and off-campus using your Athens details.

Naxos Music Library - trial period

The Library is currently running a trial of the Naxos Music Library, which is an online music service covering over 700,000 tracks which can be listened to online.

The focus is on Classical, Jazz, World, Classic Rock and Nostalgia music. The music is supplement by thousands of artist and composer biographies, music notes, artwork, published information and more.

To access the resource, go to http://www.naxosmusiclibrary.com

You will need a username and password, which you can find on the Library's password page (note that this information is only available to you on-campus)

Key Note – now contains company information

Key Note have added a company information interface to their established market research database.

They now provide access to records of more that 7 million UK companies – the information includes 5 years of financial data including profit & loss, balance sheet and key ratios, and can be viewed online or output to PDF or Excel.

You will need your Athens login details to access Key Note both on and off campus. You can find your Athens username and password in the passwords file on your F: drive.

BIOSIS Previews (1969-2008) now available online

Staff and students now have access to the BIOSIS Previews Backfiles (1969-2008), via the ISI Web of Knowledge platform.

BIOSIS Previews is a comprehensive database for the life sciences, covering a broad range of topics - botany, microbiology, zoology, agriculture, pharmacology, biophysics, ecology, bioengineering and experimental clinical medicine - and includes bibliographic details of 18 million articles. Note that this database does not cover the most recent research, but stops at 2008.

The database is accessible off-campus using your Athens username and password, which you can find in the passwords file on your F: drive.

BIOSIS Previews is made available free to UK Universities via the JISC.

Rock's Backpages

Justis Parliament now available online

The Library now subscribes to Justis Parliament, a resource which helps you to make the most of the online information available online from the House of Commons.

The resource doesn't include the full-text of the Hansard debates themselves, but it does provide a fully searchable index, and an easy way to find and link to the full-text.

Justis resources are available to Salford staff and students both on and off campus using your Athens username and password - find these in the password file on your F: drive.

IEEE Xplore Digital Library

Scopus release free iphone app

Scopus have released an iphone app which allows you to find articles, create alerts, make notes, and share links instantly.

It's available for free from Itunes and there's lots of information on the app on the Scopus website.

You will need to set up a personal account on Scopus to be able to use the app (unfortunately you can't use your Athens account). If you haven't already got one, follow the steps below to create one:

Go to www.scopus.com within your institution
Register online and set up a new username and password. Watch the tutorial on how to register at scopus.com (note that Flash is not supported by iPhones so please watch it from your desktop or laptop).
Use this same username and password with the Scopus Alerts (Lite) app on your iPhone and use your institutional email address (e.g. name@university.ac.uk) to log in.

Eurocodes replace British Standard Design Standards

Members of the School of the Built Environment will be aware that many of the British Stadards relating to construction are about to be replaced by new European-wide versions.

The University's subscription to the British Standards Online already includes access to all of the new Eurocodes.

On the right-hand side of the Home page, you'll be able to see a FAQ section which includes a question with quick links to all of the new Eurocodes.

Trial of CAB eBooks

BCIS change of password.

Users of BCIS Online should be aware that the password required to access this resource has changed. The new password can be found by either;

(a) clicking on the information icon in the 'Actions' column opposite the BCIS Online link in the 'Find Database' tab on E-Library

or;

(b) following http://www.ils.salford.ac.uk/library/resources/epasswords/ to the E-passwords page (see advice in the article 'Easy access to e-resource passwords' below if working off-campus).

New interface for EBL

EBL has a new interface which brings you the following new features:

- Bookshelf: access current loans, collections, and recently accessed titles from a centralized location
- Collections: add and organise titles in "My Collections"
- Bookmarks: access and export notes without having to enter the ebook itself, and bookmark ebooks at page level
- Search Result Filtering: filter down search results at the click of a button, by Publication Date, Publisher, Category or Language

You can access EBL via the e-Library or you can search for individual ebook titles on the Library Catalogue.

Easy access to e-resource passwords

Most of our electronic resources which require passwords will need your Athens password but a small number still need unique usernames and passwords. There is now a new web page which lets you access these passwords without having to visit or call an ILS Service Desk.

A couple of widgets are available for Web of Knowledge which let you search from your web browser or desktop. They allow you to carry out a topic search across the Web of Knowledge and an all databases search.

This widget lets you perform a search from your browser's search bar. It is only supported in Firefox 2 and above and IE 7 and above. Get the extension from:

Roam - new click and drag functions in Digimap

A new tool is now available to all registered users of Digimap.

Roam offers "click and drag" functions to locate your map, 12 map views, printing PDF in A3 and A4, searching by place name, postcode or grid reference, seamless scrolling through fixed scale maps and 5 customisable map views. You can access Roam from the icon above Classic in Digimap's Ordnance Survey collection home page.

Roam is a beta service so further improvements will be introduced over the next few months, including:

- additional print formats as alternatives to PDF

- inclusion of scalebar on printed maps

- provision of scale and extent indication on screen maps

- adding a "my maps" function for bookmarking maps

New resource: Academic Search Premier

A new database, Academic Search Premier, is now available via the e-Library.

Academic Search Premier contains indexing and abstracts for over 8,450 journals, with full text for more than 4,650 of those titles. PDF backfiles to 1975 or further are available for well over one hundred journals, and searchable cited references are provided for more than 1,000 titles.

You can find it on e-Library under Find database and can find the full text journals via Find e-Journal.

MLA Bibliography now available via EBSCO

The MLA International Bibliography & MLA Directory of Periodicals, which were previously available on the Gale platform, are now available via EBSCO. Both databases can be accessed via the e-Library.

MLA International Bibliography offers a detailed bibliography of journal articles, books and dissertations. Produced by the Modern Language Association (MLA), the electronic version of the bibliography dates back to the 1920s and contains over 2.2 million citations from more than 4,400 journals & series, and 1,000 book publishers.

In addition to the bibliography, the database includes the MLA Directory of Periodicals; the association's proprietary thesaurus used to assign descriptors to each record in the bibliography; and a proprietary, searchable directory of noted authors' names, with links to brief descriptive notes.

Fewer clicks to Full text with Find It!

We've added a new feature to e-Library so you can get to the full text you need even quicker.

When you click on in any list of articles you will now be taken direct to the full text rather than seeing the Find It menu. You'll see a banner across the top of the screen with a few options as in the image.

If you click on 'View Find It Menu' you will be taken to the full menu where you can choose which provider you'd like to visit and other options, such as checking if we have a print copy.

If you're using Find e-Journal you'll still see the menu when you click on so you can choose the supplier with the most appropriate range of years.

New feature in GMID

GMID have announced a new feature called 'My Pages'. This allows you to customise pages with content you use most often for your day to day research. You can:

Access update: IHS Technical Indexes (OHSIS, CIS, Food & Drink Online)

Athens access is currently unavailable for IHS Technical Indexes products which include Construction Information Service (CIS), Occupational Health and Safety Information Service (OHSIS) and Food and Drink Online.

Whilst the supplier works to fix this we have made alternative access arrangements. If you access the resources via the e-Library you will be able to use the updated links. Off campus users will need a username and password which is available from the info button in e-Library or from any ILS Service Desk.
