SOLAR login on mobiles - fixed

Signing into SOLAR is now working on mobiles.

Westlaw two new things

Firstly, you'll notice when you sign into the desktop version of Westlaw that there's now a new section for IDS Employment Law.

This new section brings together information from a number of sources :

  •  IDS Current Awareness 
  •  IDS Employment Law Brief  
  •  IDS Employment Law Cases  
  •  IDS Employment Law Handbooks  
Note that access to this information on Westlaw will replace the IDS Online platform which will not be available after February 2015.


Secondly, Westlaw now has a mobile version of it's site : https://m.westlaw.co.uk/?ukfed=true 

This is available both on and off campus - select University of Salford from the list of institution available.

Manchester Science Festival 2014

The University is Lead Educational Sponsor of Manchester Science Festival 2014.  On Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 October between 10am and 4pm, there will be a weekend of family-friendly fun at our MediaCityUK campus, with entrance free for this science and engineering extravaganza, that promises to inform and entertain.  In keeping with this, why not check out some of our excellent science related e-resources, such as Science Direct or ACM Digital Library or one of our numerous e-journals such as Computing in Science and Engineering or Science News?

Korea Citation Index

The Korea Citation Index has been added to the Web of Science platform.

The KCI Korean Journal Database provides a comprehensive snapshot of the most influential regional content from researchers in South Korea. Using citation connections from the Web of Science, regional work is framed within the broader context of global research. This collaboration with the National Research Foundation of Korea provides access to search and view critically important regional content with international impact.

English Historical Documents is the most comprehensive, annotated collection of documents on British (not in reality just English) history ever compiled. Conceived during the Second World War with a view to ensuring the most important historical documents remained available and accessible in perpetuity, the first volume came out in 1953, and the most recent volume almost sixty years later.

ScienceDirect off campus

At the end of last week a number of users had problems accessing ScienceDirect from off campus.  We believe that this issue is now resolved.  Please do let the Library know if you still have problems.

From 17/10/2014 :
There have been a number of problems accessing ScienceDirect from off campus today.

A few different error messages are being shown to users trying to login.

This has been reported to the supplier, and we're waiting for a reply and resolution.

In the mean time, if you see an error message, either try refreshing the page (F5) or using the back button in your browser to go back to a previous page and try again.

Apologies for the disruption to this service.  We will report further when we know more.

Engineering e-Books

The Library can now offer electronic access to over 2,000 e-Books in engineering from the publisher Wiley.

You can search or browse for these on the Wiley Online Library, where you can also cross-search with articles from thousands of electronic journals.

Or you can browse for books in these broad subject areas :


Look out for the open padlock symbol to show you which books, journals and articles you can access.

i-law.com - access

 I-law.com can now be accessed using network username and password.
This resource provides an extensive collection of case reports, analysis, legislation, forms and precedents in the areas of  construction and dispute resolution as well as Lloyd's Law Reports.

There are different ways to access this resource

  • from the Library's databases list here - this includes instructions on how to access from on or off campus
  • or search for the individual publication titles in SOLAR.  If you do this, you will need your Salford network username and password from both on and off campus.  When you try to access content, you will need to enter your e-mail address to gain full text access to the subscribed content.  




Estates Gazette Interactive

Estates Gazette Interactive (EGi) is an excellent resource, providing news, research and information service for the commercial property market. EGi will assist you in valuation reports, generating new business leads, competitive analysis and much more.

Access to this resource is as follows.
  • Go to the Estates Gazette Interactive website
    • either direct here
    • or via the Library's databases listing here 
  • You then need to set up a personal account - you must use your University email address
  • Use your email address and the password you create during the registration process to access the site in future
Your account will last for three years.  After that it will be deleted, and you will have to register again.

World Mental Health Day - October 10th

On October 10th, we will be celebrating World Mental Health Day. The Library would like to draw your attention to the many excellent electronic resources we provide including CINAHL with its extensive coverage of health including counselling, psychology and psychotherapy, and also Evidence Search which provides access to Government policy on health and social care.  We also provide a wide range of print resources, e-journals and e-books, (examples of which can be seen here).
